Ulnar Nerve Transposition

One of the main nerves in the arm, the ulnar nerve, can be surgically repositioned to relieve compression or irritation. This process is known as ulnar nerve transposition. The ulnar nerve supplies sensory and motor abilities to the hand and forearm as it extends from the neck down the arm and into the hand. Compression or entrapment of the ulnar nerve near the elbow can cause symptoms in the hand and fingers, including numbness, tingling, and pain. By moving the nerve, ulnar nerve transposition is used to prevent these problems.

What to expect at the time of your surgery:

The ulnar nerve is gently mobilized from its compressed position during the procedure and moved to a location that lessens pressure and stress on the nerve. This may entail rerouting the nerve’s course or transposing it so that it passes anteriorly (anterior transposition).
Local anaesthesia is usually used for ulnar nerve transposition.  At the location of the ulnar nerve compression, tiny incisions are performed.  After releasing the ulnar nerve from any tissues or structures that are restricting it, the surgeon realigns the nerve. To protect the nerve, this may entail creating a tunnel through muscle or connective tissue. The suture is used to close the incisions.

What to expect after your surgery:

After the surgery, the incision is closed with a bandage or sterile dressing. Following surgery, patients might have to immobilise their elbows or use polysling. To regain the arm’s strength and range of motion, physical therapy could be suggested.
