Ganglion Cyst Removal
A ganglion cyst is a noncancerous lump or mass that most frequently develops in the wrist or hand, usually close to a joint or tendon. It resembles an oval or spherical sac that is filled with a clear or translucent jelly-like substance. Ganglion cysts can range in size from pea-sized to larger, and their size may gradually increase over time or fluctuate.

What to expect at the time of your surgery:
The procedure is typically carried out while the area is numbed by local anaesthetic. There are two typical surgical methods for removing ganglion cysts. First, a cut is made over the cyst, allowing the surgeon to cut off both the cyst and its stalk (connection to the joint or tendon). The second method, known as aspiration, involves puncturing the cyst with a needle and draining the contents. However, compared to excision, which involves total removal of the cyst and its stalk, aspiration alone has a greater recurrence rate. If an incision is formed, stitches are often used to close it which can be absorbable hence not requiring removal. The incision side is covered with a sterile dressing.
Ganglion Cyst Removal Surgery Recovery:
You might be instructed to keep your hand raised after surgery in order to minimise swelling and movement in the injured area. Your doctor will give you instructions on how to take care of your wounds, manage your pain, and when you can resume normal activities like working out or going to the gym. Depending on the patient and the specifics of the surgery, recovery times can vary. Generally speaking, most patients can return to their regular activities a few days to a few weeks after the treatment. However, full recovery and the disappearance of any lingering symptoms could take a few weeks.

Ganglion Cyst Removal FAQ
Surgery to remove ganglion cysts is typically done under local anaesthetic. This causes a numbing effect on the treated area, enabling surgery to be done while the patient is still conscious. In some circumstances, particularly for more involved or extensive treatments, general anaesthesia or regional anaesthetic may be required.
Depending on the size, location, and intricacy of the cyst, the surgery’s duration may change. The process can often be completed in 30 minutes to an hour.
Depending on the patient and the specifics of the surgery, recovery times can vary. Generally speaking, most patients can return to their regular activities a few days to a few weeks after the treatment. However, full recovery and the disappearance of any lingering symptoms could take a few weeks.
While surgery seeks to totally eliminate the ganglion cyst, recurrence is a possibility. Although it varies, the recurrence rate is typically low. The likelihood of recurrence can be decreased by removing the cyst together with its stalk (the attachment to the joint or tendon).
