Excision of Morton's Neuroma

Excision of Morton’s neuroma, also known as Morton’s neuroma surgery or neuroma excision, is a surgical procedure performed to treat Morton’s neuroma, a painful condition that affects the ball of the foot. Morton’s neuroma is characterised by the thickening of the tissue around a nerve that leads to the toes, typically between the third and fourth toes. This thickening of tissue results in compression and irritation of the nerve, causing symptoms such as sharp, burning pain, tingling, or numbness in the affected area.

What to expect at the time of your surgery:

Excision of Morton’s neuroma involves the surgical removal of the affected nerve tissue that is causing the neuroma. The procedure is typically recommended when conservative treatments such as orthotics, shoe modifications, corticosteroid injections, and physical therapy have failed to provide adequate relief from the symptoms. Surgery is typically done as a day case under local anaesthesia, with a post-operative local anaesthetic given in the foot to lessen pain. Between your toes, a little incision is made, either to remove nearby tissue to create more room around the nerve or to remove a piece of the nerve itself, leaving the area between your toes permanently numb. Your foot and ankle will be bandaged following surgery, and these bandages are left on for two weeks. You will be instructed on how to walk while wearing the protective orthopaedic shoe. The majority of patients are able to return home the same day as their surgery.

Excision of Morton’s Neuroma recovery:

In the first week following your operation, you should try to rest your foot by keeping as much weight off of it as you can and elevating it above your heart whenever you can. By the end of this week, your pain levels ought to be significantly lower. You might be able to go back to work during the second week following your operation, depending on your line of work.
