Percutaneous Plantar Fascia Release

Percutaneous plantar fascia release is used to treat plantar fasciitis, a condition that causes pain and discomfort in the heel and sole of the foot. The inflammation and tightness of the thick band of tissue running around the bottom of the foot is called plantar fasciitis. By reducing stress in the plantar fascia, this surgery aims to improve foot function and decrease discomfort.

What to expect at the time of your surgery:

Local anaesthesia is used throughout the surgery. This causes the sole of the foot and the heel to become numb, enabling the patient to stay awake throughout the procedure. The surgeon makes a small incision in the heel, usually smaller than two centimeters. Part of the tight plantar fascia tissue is sliced or released through this incision using specialist equipment. Following the completion of the release, the incision is stitched and a bandage is put on.

What to expect after your surgery:

After a short period of monitoring, patients are permitted to return home the same day. Patients are told to relax, keep their feet elevated, and adhere to the surgeon’s precise post-operative care instructions.  Percutaneous plantar fascia release results in a quicker and less painful recovery. While some discomfort and swelling may be experienced by patients, these side effects are typically controlled with medications. It is advised that they resume their regular activities gradually, as complete healing usually takes a few weeks.
