About Calf Reduction

The calves are a very prominent part of the leg. They are one of the first parts of the leg to be noticed. If you feel like your calves are too big and bulky for their good, don’t worry— we’ve got just the solution for you. Calf reduction surgery can be performed on both men and women to remove excess fat and reduce the size of the calf. The surgery involves incisions made along both sides of each calf and the removal of excess fat from these areas.
During your consultation, we will discuss your goals for surgery along with any health concerns that may affect your outcome.

What is Calf Reduction ?

There are two main methods of calf reduction surgery: liposuction and excision. Results with calf surgery are not drastic and patients need to understand the anatomy of bone prominence, muscle mobility and how much active fat is actually present in the calf.
  • Liposuction involves removing fat from the leg with a hollow tube called a cannula. This technique does not require stitches, but it does leave some bruising and swelling for several weeks after surgery.
  • Excision involves cutting away excess muscle and tendons from the backside of your lower leg bone (tibia). This technique requires stitches but typically results in less bruising and swelling than liposuction does. Please be aware, excision is only performed in exceptional circumstances.
You can expect to see some bruising and swelling at first, but those symptoms should subside within a couple of weeks. You’ll need to wear compression garments for several weeks after the surgery, which will help minimise swelling and ensure proper healing.
