Gynecomastia
Currently, male breast reduction surgery (gynecomastia) is the most effective way to reduce male breasts and achieve a firmer and flatter chest. In fact, the number of men choosing to have a male breast reduction each year has increased 33% since 2010, making it one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries for men nationwide. Our surgeons are highly experienced in a variety of minimally invasive techniques to treat gynecomastia and improve the chest’s appearance.

Male Breast Reduction Options
A firm, smooth chest contour is a key characteristic of the male physique. Yet up to 50% of men are estimated to experience some degree of gynecomastia, or enlarged male breasts, at some point during their lives. Despite the nickname, having “man boobs” is no laughing matter for those who suffer from gynecomastia. If you avoid going shirtless or shy away from intimate situations because you don’t want anyone noticing your chest, then gynecomastia is affecting your life. Just because gynecomastia is common doesn’t mean that you have to accept a chest shape you are unhappy with. You have several male breast reduction options to help you get the firmer, flatter contour you envision for yourself and lose the “man boobs” once and for all.

Vaser Liposuction for Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)
In a great number of cases, gynecomastia can be successfully treated using Vaser liposuction. Using a tiny cannula, or liposuction tube, our surgeons remove excess fat by obliterating and draining the fat cells to sculpt a flatter, natural looking male chest with a relatively simple outpatient surgery and a quick recovery. Chest liposuction requires only one or two tiny scars, typically located in the armpit or another inconspicuous location in the chest area.
Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia) with Tissue Excision
In patients with larger male breasts, in cases where a great deal of the excess breast tissue is composed of glandular tissue, or in men with sagging, stretched skin on the chest, our surgeons may recommend tissue excision. During this type of male breast reduction procedure, an incision is typically made around the edge of the areola. Through this incision, excess glandular tissue and fat are removed, and the chest is sculpted into a flatter, more naturally masculine shape. While tissue
excision leaves a somewhat larger scar, most patients find that scars are barely perceptible once healed.
In many cases, tissue excision and liposuction can be combined for an optimal result. This allows our surgeons to remove an adequate amount of tissue and sculpt an attractive shape to the chest. Many men also choose to have abdominal liposuction during the same operation to achieve a leaner overall physique.

Gynecomastia FAQ
Indeed, males who use anabolic steroids may have increased breast tissue as a result of a sex hormone imbalance. Gynecomastia is one of the negative effects of using androgenic drugs or chemicals, such as androgenic steroids, prohormones, or even some prescription drugs.
Unfortunately there is no surgery without scars, however the scars for the gynecomastia procedure are hidden half way around the areola and a small one below the breast.
There is no single reason why a man might have enlarged breasts, but there are several lifestyle and genetic factors that are thought to contribute to the condition:
- Hormonal changes: fluctuations in sex hormones such as testosterone and estrogen can cause breasts to enlarge; this is common boys during puberty. In the majority of cases, puberty-related gynecomastia will subside as a young man matures.
- Drugs or alcohol: certain prescription medications, anabolic steroids and recreational drugs, including marijuana, have been linked to gynecomastia. Heavy alcohol use may also contribute to the condition.
- Genetic conditions: Klinefelter’s syndrome and other genetic disorders can cause hormonal imbalances that lead to enlarged male breasts
- Obesity: excess fat can accumulate in the chest, causing the breasts to grow
Weight loss may help reduce the appearance of male breasts that are largely composed of fatty tissue, but more often than not, gynecomastia in adult men cannot be completely eliminated without surgery. If an excess of glandular tissue has developed, no amount of diet or exercise can get rid of it.
We perform Male Breast Reduction/Gynecomastia removal with Local Anaesthetic only depending on the patient and the extent of the procedure. Post-operative discomfort is typically minimal, and most men find it easily controllable with oral pain relievers. Recovery after male breast reduction also varies depending on the extent and type of procedure but is usually relatively quick. Many men are able to return to work 2 to 3 days after their procedures and are able to resume their fitness routines after about 3 weeks. While you will probably notice an improvement immediately after surgery, final results take a few months.
The results of male breast reduction are typically long lasting so long as you maintain a stable weight and refrain from substances that are known to cause gynecomastia. We cannot stress enough how life-enhancing this surgery can be for men who suffer from gynecomastia. Our patients typically experience a boost in confidence that leads to greater satisfaction in many aspects of their social and professional lives.
