De Quervain's Tendinitis Release Surgery

The two tendons involved in De Quervain’s tendinitis are the abductor pollicis longus (APL) and the extensor pollicis brevis (EPB). These tendons run side by side in a compartment located on the thumb side of the wrist, called the first dorsal compartment. When these tendons become inflamed or swollen, they can get trapped within the compartment, causing pain and limiting the thumb’s movement.

What to expect at the time of your surgery:

The De Quervain’s tendinitis release surgery involves making a small incision over the first dorsal compartment at the base of the thumb. The surgeon then carefully opens the compartment, creating more space for the tendons to move freely without getting compressed or irritated. In some cases, the surgeon may also remove any thickened or inflamed tissue surrounding the tendons. This surgical procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia.

What to expect after your surgery:

After the surgery, patients may need to wear a splint or cast for a short period to protect the operated area and promote healing. Physical therapy and gentle exercises are often prescribed during the recovery phase to regain strength and mobility in the thumb and wrist.
