Carpal tunnel decompression occurs when a nerve in your wrist is compressed. At the bottom of the carpal tunnel are bones, and at the top is a ligament. Symptoms result from pressure inside the carpal tunnel.

About Carpal Tunnel Decompression Surgery

Carpal Tunnel Decompression Surgery is the treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome that occurs when there is pressure exerted on the median nerve whilst it is passing through the carpal tunnel in the wrist. This can cause the median nerve to swell and get inflamed, leading to tenderness, numbness, and tingling in the hand. Once the pressure is released the inflammation will subside and the symptoms will disappear.

On The Day Of Your Surgery:

Surgery is used when other treatments such as splinting, steroid injection, etc have failed. Carpal tunnel decompression is performed as an outpatient surgery under local anaesthesia meaning that you can go back home right after your procedure.

Your surgeon will numb the area and release the median nerve by cutting the transverse carpal ligament. The surgery takes approximately 15-30 minutes.

A sensitive scar could be present for several months. It can take weeks or months to fully heal.

Common causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome:

  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Previous wrist fractures
  • Frequently using vibrating tools like operating heavy machinery
