What to expect at the time of your surgery:

Before the surgery, regional anaesthesia is administered to ensure the patient’s comfort. In addition to the incisions made for ACL reconstruction, the surgeon makes further incisions on the outer side of the knee joint. The surgeon utilises the patient’s tissue to augment the ACL reconstruction or uses synthetic material to provide the required stabilisation. Small bony tunnels are created to secure the synthetic tape or the patient’s fascial tissue in such a fashion that would provide further stability following the ACL reconstruction procedure.  After completing the procedure, the incisions are closed with sutures or adhesive strips. Sterile dressings or bandages are applied to the incision sites. The patient is typically monitored for a short period before being discharged, and post-operative instructions for pain management, rehabilitation exercises, and recovery are provided.

What to expect after your surgery:

You will be provided with clear post-operative instructions, including pain management. A knee brace application is expected for the initial few weeks to provide support and protect the ACL reconstruction as well as augmentation procedures. At two weeks, the sutures will be trimmed, and a wound check will be performed. Physiotherapy will be required gradually to achieve the full range of movement and strength of the muscles. Driving and office work may be possible in 6–8 weeks, depending on the overall recovery.
