Cosmetic surgery is a key step towards meeting your aesthetic goals. While the treatment is critical, the recovery process is just as vital in achieving the greatest potential outcome. Proper post-operative care not only speeds up the healing process, but it also reduces discomfort and improves the outcome of your surgery.
If you’re planning or recuperating from a cosmetic operation, our comprehensive guide provides practical advice to help you go through the process more smoothly.
Strictly follow surgeon and aftercare advice:
During your recovery, your surgeon and aftercare team are the ideal person to consult with. Following your procedure, you will be given individualised instructions based on your specific surgery. These may include information about wound care, medication schedules, and physical activity limitations.
Why this matters:
- Following aftercare advice minimises the likelihood of complications such as infection or delayed recovery.
- Your surgeon’s experience ensures that the aftercare plan is tailored to enhance your results.
- Keep all follow-up appointments so that aftercare team can track your development and handle any concerns as soon as possible.
Rest is essential:
The healing process relies heavily on rest. While it may be tempting to resume your normal routine, giving your body the time it requires to recuperate is crucial.
Why relaxation is important:
- Rest permits your body to devote more energy to tissue healing.
- Overexertion can cause oedema and compromise incisions.
- Create a comfortable healing environment at home prior to surgery.
Maintain proper hydration:
Hydration is essential for overall health and even more so during recuperation. Drinking enough water helps your body’s natural healing processes.
Benefits of Staying Hydrated:
- Improves circulation and reduces oedema.
- Helps to cleanse out anaesthesia and drugs from your system.
- Drink at least 6-8 glasses of water per day, and if you prefer different fluids, try herbal teas or electrolyte-rich beverages. Avoid caffeinated or sugary beverages, as they might cause dehydration.
Consume a nutrient-dense diet:
During the recuperation process, your body wants more nutrients to mend tissues and combat inflammation. A well-balanced diet high in vitamins, minerals, and protein can significantly improve your healing process.
Foods to Include:
- Protein-rich foods such as chicken, fish, eggs, tofu, and beans aid in the healing of injured tissues.
- Fruits and vegetables: Leafy greens, berries, and citrus fruits contain important antioxidants and vitamins.
- Healthy fats: Nuts, seeds, and avocados aid in cellular repair.
- Avoid processed and salty foods, which can cause bloating and postpone healing.
Wear compression garments (as recommended):
If your surgeon recommends compression garments following surgeries such as liposuction or a stomach tuck, you must wear them exactly as prescribed. These garments aid to increase blood flow, reduce oedema, and support healing tissues.
How to Use them Effectively:
- Ensure that they fit snugly but not too tight.
- Follow your surgeon’s guidelines for how long you should wear them every day.
- If you’re unsure about how to use compression garments properly, consult your surgeon.
Manage swelling and bruising:
Swelling and bruising are normal side effects of most procedures, but there are strategies to effectively control these symptoms.
Strategies for reducing swelling:
- Use cold compresses (if your surgeon approves) during the first 48 hours after surgery.
- Keep the surgery region elevated to allow extra fluids to drain.
- Avoid heat exposure, such as hot baths or saunas, during the early phases of recuperation.
- Patience is essential, swelling might take weeks or even months to resolve, depending on the surgery.
Avoid smoking and alcohol:
Both smoking and alcohol might impede your recuperation. Smoking reduces blood flow, which slows recovery, but drinking dehydrates the body and interferes with treatments.
Why it’s important to avoid them:
- Smoking raises the risk of infection and poor scar formation.
- Alcohol affects the liver’s ability to digest medicines.
Return to physical activity gradually:
While rest is essential in the early stages of recovery, modest activity can help prevent stiffness and promote circulation. Your surgeon will advise you on when it’s safe to restart active activity.
Key Points to Remember:
- Begin with gentle walking to lower the risk of blood clots.
- Depending on your operation, you should avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting for a few weeks.
- Listen to your body; if an activity produces discomfort, quit immediately.
- As your body heals, gradually raise your exercise levels, but do not rush the process.
Protect your incisions and skin:
Taking care of your incisions is critical for preventing infections and reducing scarring. Your skin may also be sensitive after surgery, necessitating extra precautions.
Steps for protecting your skin:
- Follow your surgeon and aftercare team’s instructions to keep your incisions clean and dry.
- Avoid exposing scars to direct sunshine since UV rays can discolour them.
- Silicone gel or sheets can help improve the appearance of scars with time.
Maintain positivity and patience:
Healing is a long process that requires patience. Swelling, bruising, and transient asymmetry are all common signs of recovery. Believe that your body is working hard to mend.
How to Maintain a Positive Mindset:
- Concentrate on the eventual outcome rather than short-term flaws.
- Celebrate little accomplishments, such as reduced swelling or resuming to mild activity.
- If you have any concerns, contact your surgeon; they are available to reassure you.
Stay stress-free and relaxed:
Stress can hinder your recovery by causing inflammation and interfering with your body’s natural healing mechanisms.
Ways to keep relaxed:
- Use deep breathing or meditation techniques.
- Engage in mild, pleasurable activities such as reading books or watching movies.
- Delegate tasks to others to alleviate mental and physical strain.
- Prioritise self-care and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it.
Communicate with aftercare team:
Maintain open communication with aftercare team during the recovery process. If you observe any odd symptoms, such as significant swelling, redness, or extreme discomfort, call aftercare professionals right away.
Why is it important?
- Early action can help avert complications.
- Regular check-ins enable to monitor your progress and offer reassurance.
- Keep a recovery journal to record any changes, questions, or concerns.
Recovering from cosmetic surgery requires patience, dedication, and self-care. By following these tips and prioritising your well-being, you can ensure a smoother recovery and enjoy the best possible results from your procedure.
Remember, every individual heals at their own pace, so be kind to yourself during this journey. Trust your surgeon’s expertise, listen to your body, and look forward to the positive changes ahead.

Fantastic clinic, the best surgeons, I had Dr Sherif and team, they took really great care of me during my procedures, I had a full neck lift in May 2024 and have been back for upper blepharoplasty in August the results are astonishing! It's taken years off me and I feel so much more confident, I'll be 60 next year! great after care as well, Dr Sherif gives a bespoke service, he really listens and his attention to detail is fantastic! I would recommend Signature Clinic, 5 stars for 5 star treatment. I've since been back for lower blepharoplasty and had the amazing Dr Sherif again! I'm so happy with my results. The prices are affordable as my procedures were under local anaesthetic, no hospital fees or anesthetist, you even have the option of 0% finance. I can't advocate signature clinic enough ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Nelly Smith2025-03-26Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Update: 8 months healed. I will definitely be recommending Signature Clinic for Blepharoplasty surgery. So far, a week post operative I have had no concerns and supportive aftercare. Gill Belbin2025-03-04Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I first thought of having upper blepharoplasty in June 2022. Fortunately my friend decided to book it for herself in the November without my knowledge so she became my guinea pig! The surgery transformed her eyes so I knew I wanted it too. She had her surgery at Signature Clinic in London but I did lots of research and contacted several other clinics and plastic surgeons for my research. I even had a video consultation with surgeon nearby but I kept going back and looking at Signature. I booked a video consultation with them and they went through everything I needed to know. Now I was sure and booked Dr Ahmed. He has a fantastic reputation so I was confident he was the right choice for me. On the day of the surgery, August 2023, he came and spoke to me to answer any of my questions and shortly after I was shown into the operating theatre. It was a friendly but professional atmosphere and I felt at ease. During the procedure I was monitored for oxygen levels and blood pressure readings. The injections were totally painless for me and the surgery was over in less than half an hour. I was given a care kit which included a mask to put in the fridge to use to cool my eyes. I also had a large bottle of witch hazel and gauze pads and antibiotic cream to use for 7 days. I was driven home by my husband as you cannot drive for a week. I bruised badly but anticipated that as I always bruise as the slightest knock. I slept upright in a recliner chair for 7 days as this helps minimise the swelling. Within 2 weeks I could see how much of a difference the surgery had made to my old hooded eyes. No longer did I feel I had blinkers on! Signature rang me regularly to see how I was progressing and I sent them photos so they will monitor my progress for the first 6 months. The care on the day of the surgery was excellent as was the aftercare. I would recommend Signature clinic to my friends and family. As you can see from my photos, it is an amazing transformation. The first one is prior to surgery, the second is a mere 8 weeks later and the third is to show how the scar is almost invisible at 8 weeks. I’m 69 and love my new eyes. Update - reached my 70th birthday and am so pleased I had it done!! Perfume Bottle2025-02-26Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My eyes were hooded now i look ten years younger. 😀 Thank you to the surgeon and all of the staff there 😃 Donna O'Connor2024-12-22Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Dr Sherif Elamari and his team were amazing! He took lots of time to explain everything to me the morning of the procedure. The medical team were lovely throughout and the aftercare was great, I could call anytime I had a query. And my facelift looks great! The first 2 weeks were rough and you have to be able to wait out a period of looking strange. For such a reasonable price, i really wasn't expecting much, but 6 weeks later, I look great and nobody would be able to tell I've had it done. It looks so natural and I think i look about 10 years younger and am getting lots of compliments. I'm very happy with the results. It was worth every penny! I'm very grateful. Thank you very much to the surgeon and everyone at Signature clinic!Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
