Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Reduction)

Eyelid surgery can be performed for a variety of reasons. It has the ability to improve vision caused by extra skin sagging in front of the eye, in addition to restoring function. The most common cause for eyelid surgery is to improve a hooded heaviness or an aging appearance.

    About Eyelid Reduction Treatment

    blepharoplasty about

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid reduction surgery, is carried out for both medical and cosmetic reasons. As well as improving the appearance of the eyes, it can also enhance vision if loose, sagging skin is obstructing the line of sight. The procedure is most commonly performed to address hooded eyelids or signs of ageing.

It effectively reduces wrinkles, puffiness, and under-eye bags that can make the face look tired or older. Treatment areas typically include the upper and lower eyelids, as well as the tear troughs and hollows beneath the eyes, helping to create a brighter, more refreshed appearance.

    Upper Eyelid Surgery
    Lower Eyelid Surgery
    Transconjunctival lower blepharoplasty Surgery

Transconjunctival lower blepharoplasty is another option for improving lower eyelids. It is typically used to improve the aesthetic appearance of the lower eyelid without creating external scarring. When treating the deeper tissues of orbital fat, ligaments, and orbital septum, this surgical approach indicates that no skin incision is performed hence no skin excess can be removed. If there is excess skin the classic lower blepharoplasty is needed.

    GA (General Anaesthetic) Availability

The blepharoplasty procedure is available under general anaesthetic at the following locations. Your surgeon will be confirmed at consultation based on your location and individual requirements.

Hooded Eyes & Blepharoplasty - What You Need to Know

    Can Blepharoplasty Fix Hooded Eyes?

Hooded eyes are one of the most common concerns that bring patients to Signature Clinic for eyelid surgery. Unlike general upper eyelid heaviness caused purely by ageing, hooded eyes occur when excess skin from the brow area folds down over the upper eyelid, partially or fully covering the natural eyelid crease and reducing the visible lid space.

Hooded eyes can be a lifelong structural characteristic, or they can develop and worsen over time as the skin loses elasticity and the brow gradually descends. In many patients, both elements are present.

Upper blepharoplasty can be highly effective for hooded eyes where excess skin on the upper lid itself is the primary cause of the hooding. By removing the overhanging skin, the eyelid crease becomes visible again, the eye appears more open and refreshed, and the heaviness is relieved.

However, in cases where the hooding is primarily driven by a low or descended brow rather than excess eyelid skin alone, a brow lift may be a more appropriate solution, or a combination of both procedures. Your surgeon will assess your brow position and eyelid anatomy carefully at your consultation to determine which approach will deliver the best result for your specific presentation.

"I had an upper blepharoplasty with Dr Carlo Debass in March 2025 in Cardiff. I cannot fault the clinic, staff and Surgeon. My whole process was excellent and the aftercare so far has been faultless too. The clinic is not what I was expecting. It is in a business park amongst other medical businesses. The theatre was immaculate & well equipped & the staff were professional & knowledgeable. I am preparing to book a neck lift for later in the year and have every confidence in recommending Signature Clinic."

      Blepharoplasty FAQ

The goal of the procedure is to remove the excess skin to make the eyes look more fresh and rejuvenated. This in some cases may cause the eye shape to look mildly different due to excess skin no longer being present.

Scars for the upper eyelids are hidden at the natural crease making them minimally visible. Scars for the lower eyelids are placed below the eyelashes to reduce their visibility.

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is a cosmetic procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the eyelids. Blepharoplasty surgery changes the appearance of sagging eyelids and bags under the eyes.

The results of blepharoplasty last, on average, for at least 5-10 years. This number is influenced by how well you take care of your skin.

Blepharoplasty is preferred by patients who want to reduce the bags under their eyes or eliminate droopy eyelids that are making them look tired or grumpy. On some occasions it is performed in order to restore peripheral vision that has been impaired by severe excess skin.

Eyelid surgery only fixes peripheral vision that is blocked by droopy eyelids. There are many other causes of peripheral vision loss, including glaucoma, occlusions, a detached retina or a compression of the optic nerve. If you are experiencing peripheral vision loss, it is important to schedule an appointment with our eye doctor for a thorough examination and diagnosis.

Blepharoplasty is done on an outpatient basis. You will be able to go back home soon after your procedure, once your surgeon determines that it is safe for you to return home. As a rule of thumb, your stitches, if not self-dissolving, will be removed after 7 to 10 days. Most patients make a full recovery within 2-4 weeks, although recovery may take longer on occasion.

Bags in the lower or upper eyelids are common characteristics of an ageing face. Some patients have a genetic predisposition to these bags or have excess skin in their eyelids. These can be good candidates for the procedure.

At Signature Clinic, upper blepharoplasty is priced at £2,395, lower blepharoplasty at £2,695, and transconjunctival lower blepharoplasty at £2,995. For those seeking a full eyelid rejuvenation, our combined upper and lower blepharoplasty package is £4,195. All prices are fully inclusive, with expert aftercare and no hidden fees.

If you prefer to have your procedure performed under general anaesthetic, the following pricing applies: Upper Blepharoplasty £4,485, Lower Blepharoplasty £4,897, and Combined Upper and Lower Blepharoplasty £6,725.

Upper blepharoplasty addresses the area above the eye, removing excess skin from the upper eyelid to correct hooding, heaviness, and drooping. Lower blepharoplasty addresses the area beneath the eye, removing or redistributing fat to reduce under-eye bags and puffiness. They target different anatomical areas and address different concerns, though they are frequently performed together when both issues are present.

Transconjunctival blepharoplasty is a technique for lower eyelid surgery where the incision is made on the inside of the lower lid rather than below the lash line. Because there is no external incision, there is no visible scar. This approach is most suitable for patients whose primary concern is under-eye fat bulging rather than excess skin, your surgeon will recommend the most appropriate technique based on your anatomy at consultation.
Yes, in many cases. Where hooded eyes are caused by excess skin on the upper eyelid, upper blepharoplasty is an effective solution. However, if the hooding is primarily caused by a low brow position, a brow lift may be more appropriate, or a combination of both. Your surgeon will assess whether the issue is eyelid-related, brow-related, or both and recommend the right surgical plan.
There is no fixed age. Blepharoplasty is appropriate when the concern is significant enough to warrant it; some patients present in their thirties with genetic under-eye bags, while others in their sixties seek upper eyelid surgery for age-related skin laxity. Suitability is assessed individually based on anatomy, skin quality, and overall health rather than age alone.
Yes. Combined upper and lower blepharoplasty is one of the most frequently performed procedures at Signature Clinic. Having both in a single operation means one anaesthetic, one recovery period, and a combined price of £4,195, a saving compared to having each procedure separately.
