Breast augmentation is the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure in the UK, with tens of thousands of women choosing to have it each year. Whether you are looking to enhance your natural shape, restore volume lost after pregnancy or weight loss, correct asymmetry, or simply feel more confident in your body, breast enlargement surgery can deliver long-lasting, natural-looking results when performed by an experienced, GMC-registered surgeon.

At Signature Clinic, breast augmentation is now available under general anaesthetic across three dedicated surgical facilities in the UK, alongside our existing provision across ten regulated clinic locations. This guide covers everything you need to know before booking your consultation.

What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation, also known as breast enlargement or colloquially as a boob job, is a surgical procedure that increases the size, improves the shape, or enhances the symmetry of the breasts. It is achieved using breast implants or, in some cases, fat transfer techniques.

The procedure is performed under general anaesthetic and typically takes between one and two hours. Most patients return home the same day or after a one-night stay, depending on the extent of the procedure and individual circumstances.

At Signature Clinic, all breast augmentation procedures are performed by GMC-registered consultant surgeons with specialist experience in breast surgery. Your surgeon will discuss the most appropriate approach for your anatomy and goals during your consultation.

Why do women choose breast augmentation?

Every patient’s reason for considering breast enlargement is personal. The most common motivations include:

  • Enhancing breast size and shape for a more proportionate figure
  • Restoring volume lost after pregnancy, breastfeeding, or significant weight loss
  • Correcting natural breast asymmetry where one breast is noticeably different to the other
  • Rebuilding confidence after changes to the body over time
  • Improving how clothing and swimwear fits and feels

Whatever your reason, the decision to have breast augmentation should be made carefully, without pressure, and with realistic expectations about what the procedure can and cannot achieve. Your consultation at Signature Clinic is a private, no-obligation conversation with a GMC-registered surgeon who will give you honest, personalised advice.

Breast augmentation under general anaesthetic at Signature Clinic

Signature Clinic now offers breast augmentation under general anaesthetic at three dedicated surgical facilities across the UK. General anaesthetic means you are fully asleep throughout the procedure, which many patients prefer for longer or more complex surgical procedures.

GA is available at the following Signature Clinic locations:

London Marylebone The Seymour Clinic, 78 Seymour Place, London W1H 2EH Surgeon: Mr Mohammed Shalabi

Glasgow Merchant City 154 Clyde Street, Glasgow G1 4EX Surgeons: Mr Anan Ibrahim & Mr Ayman Mohammad

Altrincham Electiva, Manchester Surgeon: Mr Ayman Mohammad

As breast augmentation is performed under general anaesthetic, the price will be discussed and confirmed following your consultation, covering everything from your procedure to full aftercare, with no hidden fees. The surgical fee starts from £5,495 (implant cost is additional and confirmed at consultation based on your chosen implant).

Types of breast implants

Choosing the right implant is one of the most important decisions in your breast augmentation journey. Your surgeon will guide you through the options at your consultation, but here is an overview of what is available:

By material:

  • Silicone implants — the most commonly used type in the UK. Filled with a cohesive silicone gel that closely mimics the feel of natural breast tissue. Preferred by most surgeons for a natural look and feel.
  • Saline implants — filled with sterile salt water. Less commonly used, but an option for some patients.

By shape:

  • Round implants — provide fullness across the entire breast and are the most widely used. Suitable for patients seeking a noticeable volume increase.
  • Anatomical (teardrop) implants — designed to mimic the natural slope of the breast, with more fullness at the bottom. Suited to patients seeking a subtle, natural enhancement.

By profile:

  • Low, moderate, high, and ultra-high profile — refers to how much the implant projects forward. Your surgeon will recommend the most appropriate profile based on your chest width, existing tissue, and desired result.

Implant placement options

Where the implant is placed in relation to the chest muscle affects both the appearance of the result and the recovery experience. The two main options are:

Subglandular (above the muscle) The implant is placed between the breast tissue and the chest muscle. This approach typically involves a shorter recovery and can produce a rounder, more prominent result.

Submuscular (below the muscle) The implant is placed beneath the pectoralis major muscle. This approach tends to look more natural, particularly in patients with less existing breast tissue, and is generally associated with a lower risk of capsular contracture.

Your surgeon will recommend the most appropriate placement for your anatomy and goals during your consultation.

Incision locations

The incision is the small cut through which the implant is inserted. There are three main options, each with different scar placement:

  • Inframammary (under the breast fold) — the most common approach; incision is hidden in the natural crease beneath the breast
  • Periareolar (around the nipple) — incision follows the lower edge of the areola; well disguised but may affect nipple sensation in some cases
  • Transaxillary (in the armpit) — no scar on the breast itself; less commonly used

Your surgeon will discuss the most appropriate option for your anatomy at your consultation.

Who is suitable for breast augmentation?

Good candidates for breast augmentation at Signature Clinic are generally women who:

  • Are in good overall health with no underlying conditions that would increase surgical risk
  • Are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have maintained a stable weight for at least several months before surgery
  • Have realistic expectations about the results of the procedure
  • They are deciding for themselves and not under external pressure

Breast augmentation is not recommended for patients who plan to become pregnant in the near future, as pregnancy and breastfeeding can alter the results of surgery. Your surgeon will discuss your individual suitability in full at your consultation.

Breast augmentation recovery

Recovery from breast augmentation at Signature Clinic is structured and well supported. Here is what to expect at each stage:

Weeks 1–2: Swelling, bruising, and tightness are normal. Most patients return to light desk-based activities within one to two weeks. You will be advised to wear a supportive surgical bra continuously during this period.

Weeks 3–6: Swelling continues to settle, and implants begin to drop into their final position. Light exercise can gradually resume, but heavy lifting and strenuous activity should be avoided.

After 6 weeks: Most patients return to all normal everyday activities once their surgeon gives the all-clear at their follow-up appointment.

By 6 months: Implants feel natural, scars continue to fade, and the final result is fully visible.

Signature Clinic provides complimentary out-of-hours aftercare support as standard. Our clinical team is available throughout your recovery and committed to being at the clinic within 60 minutes in the event of any emergency.

Risks and considerations

As with any surgical procedure, breast augmentation carries some risks. These are discussed in full at your pre-operative consultation and include:

  • Capsular contracture — where scar tissue tightens around the implant
  • Implant rupture or leakage — rare; detected by ultrasound or MRI if suspected
  • Infection — uncommon with proper wound care
  • Changes in nipple or breast sensation — usually temporary
  • Asymmetry — minor differences in healing between the two sides
  • Scarring — incision scars fade significantly over time but are permanent

BIA-ALCL: There is a very small, recognised association between breast implants and a rare type of immune cell cancer called Breast Implant Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL). This is not breast cancer. It is extremely rare and has been linked primarily with textured implants. Your surgeon will discuss this and all other risks with you fully at your consultation. Further information is available from the MHRA.

All surgery carries risk. At Signature Clinic, our GMC-registered surgeons will only recommend breast augmentation where the benefits clearly outweigh the risks for your individual case.

Breast augmentation results — what to expect

Results from breast augmentation at Signature Clinic are visible immediately, though the final outcome becomes clearer as swelling resolves over the following weeks and months. By six months, implants feel natural, scars have faded significantly, and the full result is established.

Results are long-lasting. The implants themselves do not have a guaranteed lifespan, and future surgery may be needed if complications arise or if personal preferences change over time. Your surgeon will discuss implant longevity at your consultation.

Can breast augmentation be combined with other procedures?

Yes. Breast augmentation is frequently combined with other procedures at Signature Clinic:

Breast uplift (mastopexy) — for patients who want both increased volume and improved breast position. Combining augmentation with a lift addresses both concerns in a single procedure and recovery.

Breast implant removal — for patients replacing existing implants, removal and re-augmentation can be performed together.

Your surgeon will advise on the most appropriate combination for your anatomy and goals at the consultation.

In most cases, yes. The procedure does not typically affect the ducts responsible for milk production. However, this should be discussed with your surgeon at consultation if breastfeeding is a consideration.
